KNX Automation

KNX Automation protocol is an open source protocol based on which lot of manufacturers are producing components.

What is KNX Automation?

There have been many protocols such as BACnet, EIB, Modbus etc. based on which automation has been carried out. In layman’s language, a protocol is the language of communication between different components . So a component based on BACnet protocol cannot communicate to another component based on Modbus and so on, unless a converter is used. There have been lot of technical constraints for a new manufacturer to come up with components matching these protocols. In order to overcome such limitations, an open source protocol was developed and any manufacturer is free to develop their own components meeting these protocol requirements. This protocol is known as KNX. The protocol is defined under international standard ISO/IEC 14543-3.

Applications of KNX Automation

KNX can be used for all types of building automation requirements. Few of the examples are:

  1. Home Automation
  2. Automation of commercial buildings
  3. KNX based security monitoring systems
  4. Lighting control systems
  5. Remote control and monitoring systems
  6. Control and monitoring of HVAC systems (Heating, Ventilation and Air conditioning systems)
  7. Metering requirements
