What is IOT?

IOT is basically connecting various input, output and controlling functions of a system to a common platform through internet.As an example, consider a commercial building. There are numerous parameters now connected to a centralised monitoring system such as Building Management System. Such parameters include temperature, lighting, gas supply, fire system monitoring etc. There are earlier BMS systems in which you can only see the readings. Nowadays the BMS can control all those systems also. Sitting at the common control panel, you can switch off the light supply of an entire floor.
In simplest terms, when this entire system is connected to an internet based platform, it becomes an Internet of Things (IOT) connected building.
The advantage of such a system is that you can decide various modules of the platform and always enhance. Initially, you can connect only the HVAC system. Lateron, you can buy an additional software module to monitor gas supply system etc.
